ABOUT US

WHAT DO WE KNOW?

We are living in an ever-changing reality, where resilience and adaptability are fundamental to move forwards. This state is the result of: a growing population, a reduction in biodiversity, climate change, and increased urbanization, all of which are particularly damaging for our global food system. The new difficult situation, created by the aftermath of the 2007 food crisis and the current spread of COVID-19, certainly does not help. Clearly, we are facing huge challenges, but this does not mean that we cannot do something to improve the future of food systems. On the contrary, a call to action is needed!

WHAT IS OUR POINT?

Try to imagine a not so distant future where we live in a fully urbanized and globally interconnected world; where the biotech revolution will allow us to produce and analyze biometric big data leading to individualized knowledge on all aspects of human being; where climate change is still affecting the planet; and food is no longer just a matter of feeding but rather a fundamental element of culture and health. In such a future, we believe that production and consumption will shift towards fully individualized diets through sustainable and regenerative procedures. But how do we get there? And where do we start?

WHAT IS BITES OF TRANSFOODMATION?

Bites of Transfoodmation is a Swiss project which brings together a unique group of young and motivated to elaborate a shared vision and engage in a transformative process of change for a more sustainable, resilient and equal future of food systems.

HOW DO WE GET THERE?

The Bites of Transfoodmation project brings together a unique group of young, motivated individuals already (or ready to be) projected into the future of food systems. The group comprises students, researchers, activists, farmers, chefs, architects, nutritionists, athletes, food entrepreneurs, and simply consumers. Through their experiences, knowledge and ideas they are comparing different paths and looking for common denominators to elaborate a shared vision for a more sustainable, resilient and equal future of food systems. The challenge now is to translate these “bites of future” into words in the form of a Bites of Transfoodmation Manifesto accompanied by a set of concrete lines of action and find out how to apply them. The ultimate goal is to create a movement of change and contribute to the outcome of the 2021 United Nations Food Systems Summit, seeing that Bites of Transfoodmation has been officially recognized as an Independent Dialogue to the Summit.

What are the steps?

WORKSHOPS

Five virtual workshops have taken place offering the Bites of Transfoodmation community a safe space to discuss, openly and creatively, the way forward for our food systems. In recognizing the complexity of food systems, these workshops have focused on various different topics ranging from sustainable consumption, to the relationship between food and health, and the future of production, transformation and distribution. As a result of these workshops, the Bites of Transfoodmation community agreed on the need for a change of narrative, with a greater emphasis on espousing diversity, whilst nurturing a culture of empowerment, reconsidering our habitats and reassessing the value of food through the lens of a true cost approach. These stand as the building blocks of the Bites of Transfoodmation Manifesto.

DISPUTE TALKS

A series of online public events, under the title Dispute Talks, have been organized in collaboration with Istituto Svizzero offering a platform for exchange and reflection about the future of food consumption and production. During these events, young changemakers from Bites of Transfoodmation have been able to discuss their vision for the future of food systems with experts in the field.

BITES OF TRANSFOODMATION DISPUTE

The Bites of Transfoodmation Dispute took place on Friday, April 16, 2021 from 2:00 pm to 6:30 pm CEST in the form of an online public conference hosted by the Swiss Institute. Young changemakers from the Bites of Transfoodmation group discussed their shared vision for the future of food systems with high-level industry actors, envisioning an alternative future for our planet through a multidisciplinary and intergenerational dialogue.
